Any project worth its salt is going to leave clean up. And not truly good job is complete until the clean up is finished. Early in my marriage, this one would get me in trouble. I remember making a new custom coffee room table for our living room. I had been working on it for weeks and it was finally done. And it looked incredible. The problem is I hadn’t cleaned up. My wife got home, and my two sons eager to see their father ran into the house and tracked saw dust from the garage all over the entry way and on the living room carpet.
Easy to imagine that i quickly went from hero to villain. My wife loved the table, but the celebration was ruined because the mess hadn’t been cleaned up in order to appreciate the quality of work that I had done. I asked my friend of mine who runs a cleaning company what his team of professional cleaners use the most when they clean a home or office. His response, what the right tools, and the right people with the right attitude.
He response made me realize that I had all the tools I needed to clean up after my completed project, but I didn’t have the right attitude. Since then when ever I have started a new project at the house, I make sure I have the proper attitude that will carry me all the way through the clean up portion.
If I clean up, then my wife and I both get to enjoy the fruits of my project without the frustration of a new mess.
One of the most common at home handy man gigs, is fixing a loose, low, or broken door handle. This is the classic job, proper tools, you will crush it and be back to the rest of your day in 5 minutes or less. But if you don’t have the proper tools this one gig can drive you crazy and leave you will the door knob worse off than when you first began. What many people don’t realize is that door handles have hiding screws inside the handle that most people don’t see. Check out this youtube video below for easy and quick tips on fixing you door handle in 5 minutes.
Once you get your basic tools you need a place to keep them. I personally recommend a tool box. If you have a tool box you are less likely to lose tools. But equally important, if you are working on a project you just grab the tool box, take it to the project location and get to work. Before I got a tool bot, I’d go get the tool I thought I needed only to walk up stairs to fix the door and realize I grabbed the wrong size Allen wrench.
I head back do to the garage, grab another Allen wrench go back up stairs ready to fix the door. Only this time I realize I needed a Philips head screw river that is down stairs, you guessed it in the garage. All of this can be avoided when you toss everything is a tool box and just grab the whole tool box. Find out you need another tool and it is already sitting there. No need to walking down the stairs, back into the garage and then wondering what you needed.
Here are my recommendations of the best tool boxes out there.
The fist step to becoming a pro’s pro of a handy man is to have the proper tools. Without the right tool even the easiest of jobs around the house can prove to be incredibly difficult. Think about the incredibly simple job of hanging a picture on the wall. Pretty straight forward right. All you need is a hammer and a nail. Now try and do it without either. Seriously, what would you do to hang a picture if you had neither a nail nor a hammer. I’m not how you would get it to stay but I do know one thing, I wouldn’t want to sit underneath it when it comes off the wall because a small child sneezed.
Ok, Ok, I get it who doesn’t have a hammer. First of all you would be surprised who doesn’t have a hammer. But this point illustrates clearly how with the right tools job can e finished in 60 seconds or less. If you don’t have the proper tools a simple job may be almost impossible.
Ok, let’s think of another example. A screw driver. Imagine your kid opens his brand new birthday gift, but it needs batteries. No problem, except you don’t have a screw driver. Good luck with that. You ever tried to find a replacement of a screw driver. I have, and it was a total waste of time. SO you get it. Now here is a list of the most useful and important tools to make sure you have around the house. These tools will give you a great foundation to fix just about anything around the house.
